Face recognition video intercoms are the most convenient access control system for a villa. The door station identifies registered faces and grants access automatically — no keys, no codes, no phone. We install Hikvision and Dahua systems integrated with your smart home.
How face recognition works on a villa entrance
An IP video door station with a built-in camera and face recognition module is installed at the main gate or front door. The camera captures a face, the embedded processor compares it against a stored database of registered faces, and if there is a match, the gate or lock opens automatically. The entire process takes 1–2 seconds. Unregistered visitors trigger a notification to your phone with live video — you see who is there and can grant or deny access remotely. Face recognition works in daylight and at night with infrared illumination built into the door station.
Hikvision — DeepinView face recognition intercoms
Hikvision's DeepinView series includes door stations and standalone cameras with NVR-based face recognition. The DS-KH series indoor monitors connect to the DS-KV outdoor stations over IP. Hikvision's face recognition accuracy is above 99% under good lighting conditions and above 95% in low light with IR. The system stores up to 500 faces on the NVR, supports multiple doors and integrates with Hikvision CCTV for a unified security platform. We install Hikvision when the villa already has or is getting a Hikvision CCTV system — same app, same NVR, one platform.
Dahua — WizSense face recognition intercoms
Dahua's WizSense series offers face recognition door stations and standalone units. The VTO series outdoor stations pair with VTH indoor monitors over SIP or Dahua's proprietary protocol. Face recognition accuracy is comparable to Hikvision — above 98% in good conditions. Dahua systems integrate with Dahua NVRs and DMSS mobile app. We recommend Dahua when the project is already on the Dahua platform for CCTV, or when budget favours Dahua over Hikvision for the specific feature set required.
Accuracy, lighting and performance considerations
Face recognition accuracy depends on three factors: lighting, angle and database quality. Direct sunlight and deep shadow are the hardest conditions — the door station needs to be mounted at the right height (typically 1.2–1.5 metres from ground) with even illumination. Most quality door stations include a built-in LED or IR illuminator for night use. Glasses, hats and face masks reduce accuracy — modern systems handle glasses well, masks partially, and hats depend on the brim. We position the camera and set up lighting during installation to maximise accuracy for each specific entrance.
Smart home integration — automatic access scenes
When a recognised face triggers the gate, the smart home can run an arrival scene automatically. The gate opens, pathway lights turn on, HVAC switches to comfort, music starts — the system knows who arrived and adjusts accordingly. Different family members can have different scenes: parents get full access, children get gate only, staff get gate and ground floor. This integration uses the intercom's relay output connected to KNX digital inputs, Loxone I/O or Home Assistant GPIO. We program the logic based on the household's preferences.
Privacy and GDPR considerations in Cyprus
Face recognition systems process biometric data, which falls under GDPR special category data. For a private residence in Cyprus, the household is the data controller. Key obligations: the system must be configured for a defined and limited purpose (access control only), registered faces must be stored securely, and household members and regular visitors must be informed. We configure systems to store faces locally on the NVR or door station — no cloud upload, no third-party access. Remote viewing is encrypted. Cost of video intercom with Face ID in Cyprus
A Hikvision face recognition door station with indoor monitor: €800–1,500 per entry point. Adding a second door station (e.g. pedestrian gate plus driveway): €600–1,000. Dahua systems are typically 15–20% less. NVR with face recognition processing (if not already present for CCTV): €400–800. Common questions.
Does face recognition work at night?
Yes. Door stations include infrared illumination for night use. Accuracy drops slightly compared to daylight but remains above 90% with quality equipment at close range (within 1.5 metres).
How many faces can be registered?
Hikvision NVR-based systems store up to 500 faces. Standalone door stations typically store 100–200 faces. This is sufficient for a household with family, staff and regular visitors.
Can guests get access without being registered?
Yes. Unregistered visitors trigger a notification to your phone with live video. You see who is there and can grant or deny access remotely. Temporary PIN codes or NFC cards are also available for guests.
Is face recognition legal for private residences in Cyprus?
Yes, for access control on a private residence. Under GDPR, the household acts as data controller. Faces must be stored locally (no cloud upload), purpose must be limited to access control, and household members must be informed. We configure systems to comply and provide a GDPR note.
Can it be added to an existing intercom system?
Depends on the existing system. If you have an IP intercom (Hikvision, Dahua, 2N, Hikvision-compatible), a face recognition door station can replace the outdoor unit. If you have an analogue intercom, the whole system needs to be replaced with IP.
What happens if the recognition fails?
The system falls back to standard intercom mode — the visitor presses the call button, you receive a notification with live video and can grant access manually. No one gets locked out because the face was not recognised.
