Latency is the headline advantage over GEO satellite: 25–45 ms versus 600+ ms on older systems, making video calls and online gaming genuinely usable. Real-world throughput depends on three things — network load (shared capacity in your cell), the dish model, and how much of the sky is obstructed. A properly surveyed, obstruction-free install is what separates a 200 Mbps system from a 60 Mbps one.
Standard dish vs High Performance: which to choose
The Standard (Actuated) dish is the right choice for the vast majority of Cyprus villas. It is cheaper, draws less power (~50–75 W), and performs well with a clear sky view. The High Performance dish is justified in two cases: properties in the mountains or north coast with a partially obstructed sky (it has a wider field of view and better angled reception), and marine or in-motion installations. Starlink Residential in Cyprus is approximately €50/month plus VAT. The Standard hardware kit is around €299 one-off. For properties that may move between addresses or are used seasonally, the Roam plan (~€85/month) lets the dish be used at different locations. Installation is separate and depends on the villa: a straightforward roof mount with a short cable run is €350–600; a more complex install with a tall pole, long cable routing through finished walls, or a flat-roof pedestal is €600–1,200. Roam vs Residential: which plan
Residential is tied to a fixed service address and is the cheaper option for a permanent villa — lower monthly, priority network access. Roam (formerly Mobile) works anywhere Starlink has coverage and can be paused month-to-month, which suits owners who split the year between Cyprus and another country, or rent the villa on Airbnb. The trade-off: on congested cells, Residential traffic is prioritised over Roam, so during peak hours a Residential dish will sustain higher speeds. Obstructions: the single biggest issue
The most common Starlink complaint in Cyprus is not speed — it is dropouts caused by obstructions. A chimney, a neighbouring building, a pine tree, or a hill to the north can all block the low-orbit satellites passing overhead and cause 2–10 second dropouts several times an hour. The cable run from the dish to the router is the part most often done badly: a tidy installation routes the proprietary Starlink cable through conduit, into the attic or down an internal wall, terminating next to the main network cabinet. For owners who depend on a reliable connection — remote work, security cameras, smart home — a single internet source is a single point of failure. Common Cyprus setups pair Starlink with a Cablenet or CYTA fixed line, or a 5G backup, with a UniFi gateway doing automatic failover. If the primary drops, traffic moves to the backup within seconds. For villas in areas where fixed line is poor or absent, Starlink becomes the primary and 5G the backup.
