KNX vs Loxone —
which system
for your villa?

Two of the most common platforms we install in Limassol villas. Both are professional-grade wired systems. The right choice depends on your property size, build stage and priorities.

KNX vs Loxone —
side by side.

TOPIC
KNX
LOXONE
Architecture
Distributed bus — each device addressed individually. A legacy approach, best suited where KNX-native switches are specifically required.
Centralised Miniserver — modern logic, fast commissioning, excellent app. Our preferred platform.
Cable
Dedicated KNX bus cable (YCYM 2x2x0.8) plus power cabling for actuators.
Standard Cat6 to all devices. Fewer cable types, easier to source on site.
Commissioning
ETS software — industry standard, steeper learning curve. Every device manually addressed.
Loxone Config — flexible logic engine, broad third-party integration support, built-in analytics and visualisation. One tool for the entire property.
App quality
No native KNX app — depends on visualisation software (iRidium, etc). Additional cost and complexity.
Native Loxone app — clean, reliable, works well. Included in system cost.
Manufacturer independence
500+ certified manufacturers. Any KNX installer worldwide can service the system.
Single manufacturer with clear standards. A wide network of certified installers across Europe — finding a qualified contractor is straightforward.
Expandability
Unlimited — add any certified device from any manufacturer at any time.
Open ecosystem — a catalogue of compatible hardware from hundreds of manufacturers worldwide. Integration via KNX, Modbus, DMX, HTTP and other protocols.
Cost
Higher — more components, more installation time. Justified for 300sqm+.
Better outcome for the same budget. More functionality, less installation time.
Best for
Large new builds 300sqm+, properties requiring long-term manufacturer independence.
Villas, hotels, restaurants and commercial properties of any scale. Loxone can unify hundreds of buildings into a single managed infrastructure.

For most villas in Limassol, Loxone is our default recommendation — better app, faster commissioning, modern ecosystem. We install KNX only when there is a specific reason: a client requirement for KNX-native switches or existing KNX infrastructure.

Common questions.

Can KNX and Loxone work together?

Yes. A KNX/Loxone gateway allows Loxone to control KNX devices. Some installations use KNX for lighting bus and Loxone as the logic controller.

Which is more reliable?

Loxone. The Miniserver is an industrial-grade controller with a strong reliability track record, regular firmware updates and a polished app. We install KNX only when specifically required — for example, where KNX-native switches or client preference are involved.

Which has the better app?

Loxone — the native app is consistently rated higher by end users. KNX app quality depends on which visualisation software is added.

Can either system be retrofitted?

Loxone has a dedicated wireless retrofit solution — Loxone Air devices communicate via a proprietary 868MHz protocol, more reliable than ZigBee mesh. A full retrofit without cable runs is possible. KNX has no comparable wireless option for retrofit.

Not sure which
system is right?

We install both KNX and Loxone regularly in Limassol. We will recommend based on your specific property — not on what we happen to have in stock.
